The 2011 annual Harry Middleton Lectureship, Sponsored by the LBJ Foundation presents: Former President Jimmy Carter. Jimmy Carter spoke with LBJ Library Director Mark Updegrove. Major topics of the evening included analysis of current events in the Middle East and Jimmy Carter's pre- and post- presidency career. Part V, the final segment, of the discussion focuses on Jimmy Carter's perception of the great presidents of the past and his hopes for improvement in America's future. Jimmy Carter specifically discusses Harry Truman's accomplishments as well as Lyndon B. Johnson's legislative success. Jimmy Carter responds to the question, "How can young people be a positive force in the political process today?" by encouraging students and young professionals to aim to elevate the United States to a superpower in the realms of peace, human rights, and morality. He disparages the influence of money in politics today.
