This revelation was given to Joseph Smith shortly before the dedication of the Kirtland Temple in 1836, but it was not originally included in the Doctrine and Covenants. 6:34 Section 137 is a message of hope, deliverance, and redemption. Joseph sees the future redemption of members of his family. 10:40 Verses 1-4: Description of the celestial kingdom includes the transcendent beauty of heaven’s gate, the blazing throne of God, and streets paved with gold. 13:58 Verses 5-10: Who did Joseph see in the celestial kingdom? A new doctrine is revealed that those who did not receive the gospel in mortality will have an opportunity to receive it. 20:09 D&C 138. The vision on the redemption of the dead was revealed to President Joseph F. Smith in 1918. 24:55 Life sketch of Joseph F. Smith. He faced many challenges beginning in his youth and all through adulthood. He was surrounded by hardship. It seemed that death was stalking him. Many people died in World War I and the influenza epidemic. His oldest son, Hyrum Mack died of a ruptured appendix. Hyrum’s wife died in childbirth, but the baby lived. 29:10 Before receiving the revelation in D&C 138, Joseph F. Smith was pondering and “reflecting upon the great atoning sacrifice that was made by the Son of God, for the redemption of the world” and the teachings of the apostle Peter in 1 Peter 3-4. 34:30 Verse 11 “As I pondered over these things which are written, the eyes of my understanding were opened, and the Spirit of the Lord rested upon me.” The pattern for receiving revelation is seen in this account and others throughout scripture, 1 Nephi 10-11, D&C 76, Joseph Smith’s First Vision. 40:39 Verses 12-32. The Vision of Joseph F. Smith. The point is made that Jesus Christ did not go to spirit prison. See verses 25-32. 45:27 John the Baptist died just prior to the death of Jesus Christ. Did John the Baptist prepare the way for the Lord in the spirit world like he did in mortality? Consider the joy of those who beheld Jesus in the spirit world. 51:06 Verses 30-49 Messengers were appointed and clothed with power and authority to proclaim liberty to all who were in darkness. They were taught faith, repentance, vicarious baptism, and the gift of the Holy Ghost (verse 33-34). 56:27 Exaltation is a family endeavor. There are many blessings available to those who do family history work. 57:54 Verse 53-58. President Joseph F. Smith sees Joseph and Hyrum and other early church leaders. He sees the building of temples, and the premortal world where the servants of God received their first lessons. “The dead who repent will be redeemed, through obedience to the ordinances of the house of God.” 1:02:08 Why did it take so long for D&C 138 to become canonized scripture? 1:06:11 Conclusion: The glorious visions of Joseph Smith and Joseph F. Smith. There are beautiful blessings and promises connected with family history work. ____________________ This channel may make use of copyrighted material, the use of which has not always been specifically authorized by the copyright owner.
