It was an American tragedy that Joseph Smith was martyred in Carthage Jail and that Thomas Ford, governor of Illinois, broke his pledge to keep Joseph safe. Section 135 announces the martyrdom of Joseph and his brother Hyrum. After their death, the saints continued to be threatened with violence and left Nauvoo on their journey to the Salt Lake Valley.
