Section 133 (the appendix) was given in November 1831 shortly after D&C 1 (The Preface) was given. Section 134 is a declaration of beliefs regarding government and law. 2:55 Verses 1-2 “Hearken O Ye People of my church” is the same as Section 1, verse 1. God is speaking within the cultural perspective of the people. These people are motivated by millennial or end time thinking. 6:51 Verse 3 “He shall make bare His holy arm” Symbolic meaning for the terms “arm” and “hand” in scripture. The arm of the Lord is associated with God extending His covenant to others. The hand of the Lord is associated with the execution of justice or mercy. The right hand is associated with blessings, mercy, and grace. The left hand relates to the delivery of justice or judgment. 12:00 Verses 5-10 “Go ye out from Babylon”. What does the word Babylon mean? 14:23 Verses 10-16 There is a lot to be done to help the restoration of the gospel move forward. Prophecies of the 2nd Coming motivate people to prepare. 16:14 Verses 18-37 “This gospel shall be preached unto every nation, kindred, tongue, and people.” How the number four in scripture relates to things of the earth. The number three is associated with the things of heaven such as the godhead. What happens when earth combines with heaven? The number seven represents completeness, wholeness. 21:04 Verse 38 “Fear God and give glory to Him.” Be careful about discouragement. Jesus stands at the head of this work. He will accelerate His work in His own time and in His own way. 24:37 Verse 46 “Who is this that cometh down from God in heaven with dyed garments?” Symbolism of the wine-press explained. What does it mean to have our clothing washed in the blood of the lamb? 29:46 Verses 50-62 The names of ancient prophets who have been redeemed by Jesus Christ are listed. All those who choose Jesus Christ in this life can be redeemed. Every creature has the opportunity to choose. 35:20 Concept taught by C.S. Lewis in chapter 9 of the Great Divorce. It is a story about people needing to let go of things that are binding them down. 40:32 D&C 134. This section was probably written by Oliver Cowdery and approved by the Church to be included in the Doctrine and Covenants. Joseph Smith later approves the vote. It is a declaration of beliefs regarding government. This is different from other sections in that it is not revelation from God. Read this section in context with the challenges of the Saints who are not receiving help from the government. 45:23 Verse 1-4: We believe that government and religion are instituted by God. All governments have the right to enact law while holding sacred the freedom of conscience. 49:45 Verse 10. What rights do religions have? All religions may deal with their membership. It is not the right of religion to take away property or life but only to excommunicate or remove privileges connected with membership. 51:30 Conclusion: When we connect with heaven, we will be able to see God’s goodness in the infuriating unfairness. (Elder Renlund – April 2021 General Conference). We will be able to see how we grew in the injustice. We will find that we have become more like Jesus Christ. ____________________ This channel may make use of copyrighted material, the use of which has not always been specifically authorized by the copyright owner.
