Friction developed between Saints and residents of Missouri. 7:40 During the summer 1836 the Saints began to settle Far West. At the same time In Kirtland, things are not going well because of the financial crisis. 9:14 In 1838, the conflict in Missouri was accelerating. Challenges include fights during the election, affidavits from Thomas B. Marsh and Orson Hyde, the Battle of Crooked River, Governor Bogg’s extermination order, Haun’s Mill Massacre, Joseph and six others arrested, and the city of Far West was pillaged. 16:16 Quotes from Joseph Smith and Parley P. Pratt about how they felt when they were imprisoned. Joseph’s majestic rebuke of the prison guards. 23:54 D&C 121, 122, and 123 come from a long letter that Joseph dictated while he was in Liberty Jail. Verses 1-2 of Section 121: “Where is the pavilion that covereth thy hiding place . . how long shall thy hand be stayed . . . and thy pure eye behold the wrongs of thy people?” 30:14 Verse 3 “bowels moved with compassion”. What are the bowels? Reference given to an article written by John Durham Peters (1999) “Bowels of Mercy” in the BYU Studies Quarterly. The Greek term for bowel is “splangchna” which is used to describe not only the vital organs but also the entire human personality the body and spirit together. In modern Greek one of the tenderest things you can say is “splachno mou” meaning that your soul is my soul; that you are my inner parts. 37:02 Verses 4-8 Joseph’s plea to God to "stretch forth thy hand", "let thine eye pierce . . . thine ear be inclined . . . thine heart be softened, and thy bowels moved with compassion" . . . and to "remember thy suffering Saints." God’s response to Joseph is a message of peace and triumph. 45:21 Verses 26-33. This is the darkest hour in Church history. Both Joseph and the Saints are guided by the Spirit through life-changing experiences. Nothing can prevent God from pouring down knowledge upon the Saints. 50:03 Verse 34-40. “Many are called but few are chosen. And why are they not chosen?” 53:06 Verses 41-46 Instructions and blessings for wielding real power and influence. Reference to the Shakespeare play, “Merchant of Venice.” Power will flow with mercy. 59:06 D&C 122. The Lord provides both perspective and a promise in regard to mortal suffering. 1:02:51 D&C 123. The Saints were instructed to collect an account of their sufferings. Joseph took these accounts to Washington D.C. to present to the President and the Legislature. He receives no help. The 678 records of abuse are given to the Library of Congress. 1:04:50 Verses 16-17 of D&C 123. “A very large ship is benefited very much by a very small helm in the time of a storm.” "By small and simple things are great things brought to pass." Let us cheerfully do all things that lie in our power, trusting in God and knowing that His purposes are being moved forward. ____________________ This channel may make use of copyrighted material, the use of which has not always been specifically authorized by the copyright owner.
