“Spiders,” by Gail Gibbons

Nonfiction is fantastic and not just for the big kids! Young children love learning real facts about the world around them. For our toddlers, a book like this is perfect for a picture walk as you turn the pages and explore together. Asking “What do you see?” invites children to utilize their language skills and build vocabulary and background knowledge. It’s also a wonderful opportunity to practice engaging in back and forth conversations. For our older toddlers, you might read just a few pages and only portions of the text, asking them questions and hearing their thoughts. Notice in this short reading how Jenny incorporates language, literacy, science AND math as she reads portions of the first few pages in the book, “Spiders,” by Gail Gibbons.
