In 1836, the Church leaders were heavily in debt. Joseph, Hyrum and other leaders travel to Salem, Massachusetts to investigate a claim about money they might find. D&C 111 was received after it became apparent that no money would be forthcoming. 2:22 How can we avoid making rash decisions or “folly”? Decisions made when hungry, angry, lonely, or tired (HALT) are often misguided. Exercise patience and hold on to the iron rod while in the midst of darkness. 6:10 D&C 111. What is the real treasure in Salem? How long will it take to find it? “In due time”, Erastus Snow was successful teaching the gospel in Salem. God turns Joseph’s and Hyrum’s folly into miraculous success. Trust God and know that “in due time” He will accomplish His work. 11:33 “Let God Prevail.” Verse 10-11. Do you want more fruit? Look to the root, into the soil of your conversion. By their fruit you shall know them . . . by their root ye shall grow them. Time is essential for roots to grow deep into the soil. 16:31 Increased opposition and adversity for the church during the financial crisis of 1837. The Kirtland Safety Society is created and later fails. 26:20 Heber C. Kimball is called to England on a mission. Thomas B. Marsh, president of the Quorum of the Twelve, feels that Joseph overstepped his bounds by issuing the call. D&C 112 is a revelation to Thomas B. Marsh and illustrates God’s understanding of men and the enormity of His goodness and grace. 35:20 Verse 10 “Be thou humble”. Word study on humility (Latin humilis means dust) and Adam (Hebrew meaning of dust). We are not greater than the dust of the earth. We must rely on God to become greater. 39:42 Verse 23-27 “all flesh has become corrupt before my face.” Everyone is struggling. The word corrupt comes from the word rupture. Brokenness invites healing. Seek to uplift and support each other. “ 44:42 Verse 30-34 Clarification of roles and responsibilities of Church leaders. “For unto the Twelve, and the First Presidency, who are appointed to be your counselors and your leaders, is the power of the priesthood given.” All of us are called to the work of God. 47:44 Thomas B. Marsh helps to unify the Twelve, then the incident occurred with his wife Elizabeth withholding cream from a neighbor contrary to their agreement. She denies any wrongdoing. Thomas B. Marsh is eventually excommunicated. Two years after his wife’s death, he comes to Salt Lake City and begs to be re-baptized. 54:22 D&C 113. Verses 1-6: Questions answered about Isaiah 11. Who is the Stem of Jesse? What is the rod and what is the root of Jesse? Consider the tree analogy and the potential for bearing fruit. Cross reference with John 15. “I am the vine, ye are the branches.” 59:50 What happens if we become prideful and cut ourselves off from the vine? Why pruning or cutting some things out of our life is required to become fruitful. 1:03:53 Verse 7-9. What is meant by the command “Put on thy strength, O Zion?” The scattered remnants will return, barriers will be removed. We can put on beautiful garments. There is always hope in Christ. 1:07:39 D&C 114. Revelation to David W. Patten. He is counseled to settle up his business as soon as he can and prepare to serve a mission to England, but he won’t leave for another year. Six months later, he helped to rescue Saints in Missouri. In the struggle, he was shot and died. His mission to England was fulfilled in unexpected ways. 1:14:46 How do we respond when promises are not fulfilled the way we think they should be fulfilled? Remember to Let God Prevail . . . abide in Him . . . . be Humble. He will forgive, strengthen, help us become fruitful, and overlook our follies. ____________________ This channel may make use of copyrighted material, the use of which has not always been specifically authorized by the copyright owner.
