In this section we learn principles for working with councils. Membership (or disciplinary) councils are always done in the spirit of love and to help the individual in the process of repentance and progression. 6:54 The root of repentance is change and to become more like Christ. The new Church handbook explains three reasons for a membership council (1) to protect others, (2) to help a person repent and access the redeeming power of Jesus Christ, and (3) to protect the integrity of the Church. 10:34 A Council is structured so different perspectives can be brought into the discussion. Revelation is scattered among us. 17:00 Councils provide a place of growth for everyone involved. Consider the growth that occurs in council members as they participate and carry out church procedures. Consider the growth in the individual who is being helped in the repentance process. 25:11 D&C 103 The call of Zion’s Camp or Camp of Israel. The Kirtland Saints are called to assist in redeeming Zion in Missouri. However, there was more to the journey than they realized. While the work of Zion continues even today, the trek to Missouri with its attending challenges provided an opportunity to train the future leaders of the Church. 32:34 Tyler shares an example from his work with future seminary teachers. Not everyone reached their final goal. The Lord may inspire us to pursue a goal, and we later discover that what we learned in the process was more vital than reaching the end goal. 39:18 D&C 104 The United Order and Church finances. Even though we don’t use this system today, the principles of finance are eternal: (1) appoint every man his stewardship, (2) recognize that everything belongs to God, and (3) help the poor. 45:39 Verses 57-58. The Church makes use of two treasuries to finance the work of salvation: (1) A sacred treasury for printing the word of God, carry out the work of the Lord, and prepare for the 2nd Coming, and (2) another treasury (verse 67) to improve the communities where they live. 52:19 Verse 78. Final principles revealed in D&C 104: (1) pay all your debts, (2) resolve personal finances to be in a better position to provide for others. 54:46 D&C 105 The Lord intervenes and Zion’s Camp does not have to fight. Zion will be built up under the laws of the Celestial Kingdom. The elders are asked to wait for a season so that it can be done peacefully. 1:02:22 Verses 38-39 “Sue for peace”, “lift up an ensign of peace”, “make a proclamation of peace”. As we continue our efforts to build Zion, we can mend bridges, forgive others, and learn to be peacemakers.
