It can be easy to think that there's no way to win. There were times when the pioneers felt that way. They felt surrounded by enemies. Sometimes they were even former friends who had become enemies. It was hard, and scary. There is something Heavenly Father promised them. In section 71 he promised that no weapon that was formed against them would prosper. Sometimes it was real weapons like guns, but mostly it was bad or misguided men trying to stop the work of the gospel from spreading. To see more of what was happening let's take a quick look at our restoration timeline! Today we're in late 1831 and early 1832. There were lots of lies and mean things being said about the church and Joseph Smith. This was making life hard for the members and causing the growth of the church to be very slow. Do you remember Ezra Booth? His words were an example of a weapon that was formed against the members. He was trying to hurt the church, but he did not succeed. Heavenly Father called on the members to teach and preach more; to be faithful and defend the truth. Ezra Booth may have had a little success with a few people, but his efforts have been almost entirely forgotten by history, and the church has continued to grow. We each have to do our part, like you two are doing, but there are others who can help, leaders. I bet you have some great leaders in your kingdom. Leaders are important to help God's kingdom as well. Do you remember Edward Partridge? He was an important leader who helped the church a lot in it's early days, but the church was growing and it was time to call more leaders. The second bishop of the church was called in 1831. His name was Newel K Whitney. He was from Kirtland. He owned a store there that was very important for the church in its early days. In section 72 Newel K Whitney was called, and we learn about his responsibilities as a bishop. Many of these same responsibilities are what the bishop does in your day. The job of the bishop is to make sure people are taken care of physically and spiritually. #comefollowme #DoctrineandCovenants #scriptureexplorers #churchofjesuschristoflatterdaysaints #searchthescriptures #comefollowme2021 #D&C29 #lds #ldschurch #hearhim #lighttheworld #mormon
