An overview of conferences, councils, and counsels. The beauty of a council is the variety of perspectives that are considered to get a more complete picture. 5:42 Counseling in councils helps members become unified in witness and testimony on what to teach and what to do. A council is a group of people. To counsel means to discuss together before making a decision. The decision-making process is much improved in marriages, families, and church settings when we counsel together. 11:34 Timing of revelations. D&C 67-69 and D&C 1 and 133 were given between November 1 and November 11 of 1833. Church leaders during this time were discussing a need for a preface to the Book of Commandments. 16:44 God allows us to suffer and struggle through the learning process for our own learning and growth. This can be a difficult doctrine to follow but God loves us enough to allow us challenging experiences to help us become more like Him. 19:05 D&C 67: 5-8 There are clear apprehensions about Joseph’s imperfections. God allows the other leaders to experiment in writing a better revelation. The men learn again about Joseph’s calling as a prophet of God. 22:37 Verses 8-10 God speaks to men according to their own language. Cross reference with D&C 1: 24 and 2 Nephi 31: 3. 25:43 Joseph felt constrained by the language in teaching eternal truth. However, he kept moving forward, trusting in the essence of the message rather than the mechanics. 30:59 D&C 68. What is scripture? May be narrowly defined as the official canon, or it can also be more expansive as the word of the Lord to us personally or to a specific region or group of people. 35:08 Tyler shares his experience while receiving his patriarchal blessing. 40:02 "Out of time statements" in D&C 68. See verses 15, 22, 23 references to the First Presidency. At this time in the church, the First Presidency did not exist. These words were added in the 1835 edition of the D&C. 41:15 Verse 25. Responsibilities of parents who have children in Zion. Tyler shares a story about a father who was successful in his career who gets a reminder about spending time with children. What you sacrifice for, you come to love more deeply. 45:34 The most powerful experiences with family come from spending time with them. How that time is used looks different for every family. 47:51 Example of the early Israelites. Cross reference Deuteronomy 6: 4-5. Strict lesson formats are not necessary. Live your life and let your life be an example to your children of your faithfulness. Find times to talk with children about things that matter. 51:04 Two final thoughts: (1) For feelings of inadequacy, remember God put family members together for a reason. He sent these children to you and has given you what you need to raise them. (2) that which you sacrifice for, increases your capacity to love. 57:29 Conclusion: As we try to be like Jesus, look for opportunities to find those around us to counsel with, to seek the Lord’s will, and to spend quality and quantity time with those whom God has entrusted into our care. __________________________________________________ This channel may make use of copyrighted material, the use of which has not always been specifically authorized by the copyright owner.
