The journey from Kirtland to Independence is long and difficult. There are lessons to be learned in the day-by-day experiences along the way. 5:27 D&C 60: 1-4. We have a covenantal responsibility to share the gospel and use our talents to help others. 10:48 Verses 5-10: “It mattereth not unto me” There are many ways to accomplish the work. If we were commanded in all things, our agency would be compromised. The elders counsel together to determine the how. 16:20 Verses 10-11 Instructions given about money, industry, and saving. 17:57 Verse 12: The group that is coming to Missouri has been sent to preach the gospel. They should not idle away their time, nor should they bury their talent. Verse 14: Revelation given to return to Kirtland, proclaiming the gospel along the way. By the third day of travel, the group encounters danger and serious discord. 21:25 D&C 61. God forgives and shows mercy. He identifies himself as one with all power. 26:16 Verses 5-10: W.W. Phelps sees in vision the destroyer riding in power upon the face of the water, yet he and Sydney Gilbert continue their travel by water. Did this experience increase their faith and confidence? See verses 9-10: “and through faith they shall overcome . . . I, the Lord, will be with them.” 31:18 Verses 18-20: “Today my anger is turned away”. Compare with 3 Nephi 22: 7-8 and Isaiah 54: 7-8 This account provides an object lesson of the covenant path: trusting, exercising faith in Jesus Christ, repenting and acknowledging sins, receiving forgiveness, continuing to move forward. 33:55 D&C 61: 21-39 “It mattereth not unto me, if it so be that they fill their mission” (verse 22). The elders are directed to take their journey in haste and to also use their agency. “They shall do like unto the children of Israel, pitching their tents by the way” (verse 25). The reference to ancient stories reminds the elders of their symbolic journey. 39:26 D&C 62. Joseph and his group are traveling back to Kirtland and meet a group on the way to the land of Zion. Verse 3 reminds us the Lord forgives sins and rejoices in our efforts to be obedient. Verse 5 reminds us the Lord honors agency and the elders are directed to travel and preach according to judgment and as directed by the Spirit. “It mattereth not unto me, only be faithful”. 45:58 Tyler shares a personal story about his mother, Grace Griffin. The Lord grants us eyes to see others in their eternal role. This vision keeps us moving forward on the journey. 55:08 Conclusion: The grace of God is real. Keep moving forward doing the best you can. Seek to recognize His grace in your journey.
