Historical background of the Shakers and their beliefs is helpful in putting D&C 49 in context. The Shaker’s beliefs give us reason to question how the gifts of the Spirit are manifest. 12:28 D&C 49: The four missionaries to the Lamanites introduce the Shakers to the gospel. The Shakers and the Latter-day Saints have some common beliefs but also some differences. What should be the focus? Leman Copley, a former member of the Shaker community asks, “What should I believe?” 16:30 Verses 1-4 Sidney Rigdon, Parley P. Pratt, and Leman Copley are sent to the Shakers. Sydney and Parley are commanded to preach the gospel. Leman is commanded to teach according to what is being taught by God’s servants. 19:54 Verses 5-14 We read of instances of the Father speaking and the Son speaking. Regardless of whose voice is primary, the message is the same. There is unity in teaching Heavenly Father’s plan of faith in Jesus Christ, repentance, baptism, receiving the Holy Ghost. 27:54 Cross-reference with D&C 50:43 “The Father and I are one. I am in the Father and the Father in me; and inasmuch as ye have received me, ye are in me and I in you.” Consider the preposition IN. What is your relationship with the Father and the Son? 31:03 Verses 6-7 Word study on the phrases “Son of man” with lower case m, “Son of Man” with uppercase M, and Son of God. Cross-reference with Moses 6:57. 36:02 Verse 7: “No man knoweth, neither the angels in heaven” the hour and the day of the 2nd Coming. Story of the "dark day" on May 19, 1780, which caused some to think the hour of the 2nd coming had come. Quote from Abraham Davenport (Senator from Connecticut) “The day of judgment is either approaching or it is not. If it is, I choose to be found doing my duty.” 40:33 Verses 8-14 Is there a pattern? When God speaks about the end times, does He follow up with an invitation? What is the invitation? 43:00 Verses 15-22 Clarification provided to show differences between the Shakers beliefs and the true gospel in regards to marriage, abstaining from meats, and the 2nd Coming. Word study on abundance, inequality, and iniquity. 51:22 Verses 25-27 Zion shall flourish. Teach repentance. God will be our rearward. What does the word rearward mean? After reading this revelation to the Shaker community, they reject it but the effort was not in vain; the Lord honors agency. 56:30 D&C 50. Historical background. Early members of the Church are confused about the manifestations of the Spirit. The gifts of the Spirit are given to edify and build up the kingdom and not to be a distraction to the message. 59:01 Verses 10-25 “Unto what were ye ordained? To preach my gospel by the Spirit, even the Comforter which was sent forth to teach the truth.” The end doesn't justify the means. You cannot teach the truth through the use of false spirits. 1:02:22 Verse 26-30 “He that is ordained of God . . . is the least and the servant of all.” 1:06:45 Verses 31-35 Instruction on how to discern and protect ourselves from false spirits; we must use both mind and heart together to avoid deception. 1:08:29 Verses 40-44 Concluding testimony: “Ye are little children . . . and must grow in grace and in the knowledge of truth.” We will be guided by Jesus Christ as we walk the covenant path and seek to become more like the Savior.
