Historical background for D&C 46. 5:15 Elder and Sister Renlund provided a playing field analogy with four boundaries as a guide for conducting meetings in the church: (1) scriptures, (2) church handbook, (3) words of the prophets, (4) direction of local leaders. Within those four boundaries, we seek the help of the Holy Ghost. 8:53 Verse 7: The Saints are cautioned about things that are not of God and counseled to ask of God, do all things in holiness of heart and walk uprightly before Him. 12:40 Verse 8 – The gifts of the Spirit. These gifts are also listed in I Corinthians 12 and Moroni 10. 14:52 Verse 9-10 – Gifts of the spirit are given “for the benefit of those who love me and keep all my commandments, and him that seeketh so to do.” 21:30 Do I have a spiritual gift? How can I discover them? 24:53 verses 13-14 - The first gift identified is “to know that Jesus Christ is the Son of God . . . to others it is given to believe on their words” 34:17 verses 15-16 – Gift of knowing “the differences of administration” and “diversities of operations” 36:12 verses 17-18: GIfts of “the word of wisdom” and “the word of knowledge” 39:53 verses 19-21: Gifts of having “faith to be healed”, “faith to heal”, and “the working of miracles” 42:48 verses 22-25: GIfts “to prophesy”, of “the discerning of spirits”, “to speak with tongues”, and of “the interpretation of tongues” 46:28 verses 26-27: Why the gifts of the Spirit are given and special gifts given to those who watch over the church. 48:28 Elder Marvin J. Ashton spoke about other less conspicuous gifts. 52:24 verses 11 and 29: “for all have not every gift . . . unto some it may be given to have all those gifts.” Cross-reference with D&C 107:91-92 54:25 After the Apostle Paul taught about the gifts of the spirit, he reminded the saints that the church is like a body and the body is most successful when all members are working together. See 1 Corinthians 12: 12-27. 57:41 D&C 47: John Whitmer is called to be a historian for the Church. 1:04:13 D&C 48: The Saints are gathering in Ohio. Practical counsel is given for procuring land and using resources wisely. 1:07:41 Conclusion: There is a God in heaven and He knows what He is doing. We can see His hand as He works with people with different gifts, struggles, and opposition while the restoration unfolds.
