Create a Rotoscope Animation with Mocha and After Effects

submitted by Reyreyreys Tv on 03/25/21 1

Rotoscoping is an animation technique in which artwork is traced over the live-action film, frame by frame. In this tutorial, Ross Shain from Boris FX takes inspiration from famous clips like Richard Linklater's "Scanner Darkly", Aha's "Take on Me" and Adult Swim's "Dream Corp LLC" to create a stylized, animated look. The Mocha Pro plug-in for Adobe After Effects was used for planar tracking and to segment the image into native AE mask layers. We also used magnetic spline and edge-snapping tools to save hours of time with less manual drawing and keyframing.
