Joseph had that vision and then he had to go back to his life. People were mean to him, and he was having a hard time, but then in 1823 something happened. He was praying one night in his room when all of a sudden an angel appeared to him. But this wasn't just any angel, it was Moroni! He was there to teach young Joseph many things he needed to know about the work he had ahead of him. He also told him about an ancient record that was hidden that Joseph would help to translate. Do you know what that record was? The Book of Mormon! Moroni told him much more, then he went away. Joseph was thinking about everything he had heard when all of a sudden Moroni appeared again. Joseph had to go and live his life for a time. He met and married Emma, and he also had a lot more people being mean to him because he still talked about his vision. He went back to the hill every year as Moroni wanted him to. Finally he was able to take the plates in 1827. This was a hard time for him. people tried to steal the plates from him many times but they were kept safe until Joseph didn't need them anymore. Moroni came and took them away. But while he had them and worked on the translation he met some important friends. One of these was Martin Harris. We'll learn more about him later, but he helped Joseph with the plates in many ways. One of things he did that was important was to try to get the translation of the book looked at by someone who could say that it was correct. Martin Harris took some of the characters to a man who studied languages, his name was Charles Anthon. Charles Anthon looked at what was written on the paper, and what Joseph Smith had written as the translation. Martin Harris said he wrote a special paper that said it was correct. Then he asked Martin Harris if he could see more of the book. Martin said that he couldn't, because the book was sealed. Charles Anthon then took the paper he had written and ripped it up.
