The Walter Munk Foundation for the Oceans has an exciting new project to share with the world on this historic 50th Anniversary Earthday! Their team of scientists and educators are preparing to launch an online component to “The MAP of the Grand Canyons of La Jolla” which has just been installed in San Diego. This unique giant tile masterpiece features over 100 life-sized creatures found swimming in the waters just offshore, and information about each one. Creating educational content to be enjoyed by students across the globe, The MAP curricula will teach about the physics of wave dynamics, the importance of Marine Protected Areas, and the delicate ecosystem balance at play in the species-rich kelp forests off California and beyond. Youth will connect with 3 experts involved in The MAP to learn about their unique areas of interest, from small fishes to seahorses to whales. Connecting students with field experts increases their understanding and perspective about how simple choices we make on land have a direct impact on ocean animals. We all rely on the ocean, whether we live close to it or not, in ways that might surprise us. This webinar shares cutting-edge marine research with students who may become interested in STEM fields, and illuminate a path to becoming a good ocean steward.
