The Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa (Zeitz MOCAA) in Cape Town, South Africa, is the first major museum in Africa dedicated to contemporary art. The Zeitz MOCAA collects and exhibits twenty-first century art from Africa and its Diaspora. The museum has its home in a repurposed historic Grain Silo complex at the V&A Waterfront in Cape Town. Designed by Heatherwick Studio, it features over one hundred galleries. In this video, we speak with the Executive Director and Chief Curator of the museum, Mark Coetzee, who talks about the significance of the new museum, the goals and the basic concept of the Zeitz MOCAA, and the exhibition program. “…our mission really in a nutshell is to collect, preserve, research and exhibit cutting-edge artifacts from the 21st century from Africa and its diaspora…” (Mark Coetzee, Executive Director and Chief Curator, Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa) In the run-up to the opening of the Zeitz MOCAA in September 2017, VernissageTV had the chance to have a look at the new museum and speak with the Executive Director and Chief Curator of the museum, Mark Coetzee, and the museum's Curator at Large for Photography, Azu Nwagbogu.
