Pretrial conference starts over German genocide in Namibia It’s regarded as the first genocide of the 20th century - between 1904 and 1908, one hundred thousand Herero and Nama people were killed by German troops in what is now Namibia. Then it was the German colony of South West Africa - but despite acknowledging the genocide, Berlin says it won't pay compensation. So a group of Namibian people has sued Germany in the United States.
