Germany is being asked to pay compensation to families in Namibia for atrocities committed during colonial rule. German officials recently recognised the mass killings there in the early 1900s as a genocide. But they ruled out any reparations. But in a significant shift in Berlin's stance, the two governments have now begun negotiations over payments. It's seen as a step towards justice for the descendents of the victims.
