Tensions high after thousands of protesters storm Serbian parliament over planned lockdown

Tensions remain high after thousands of anti-lockdown protesters stormed the Serbian parliament building in Belgrade on Tuesday evening in a demonstration against a new lockdown planned for the capital this weekend to curb the spread of the coronavirus. Although on Tuesday, Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic had said a new lockdown would be imposed in Belgrade on the weekend, he said on Wednesday he had ultimately advised the government and health authorities not to introduce it. Vucic called on protesters on Wednesday to stop attending anti-government rallies to avoid further spread of the coronavirus after dozens of demonstrators and police were hurt in overnight clashes.
