He is a historian with expertise in 19th and 20th century Asian American history and author of a book on South Asian migrants and their interracial relationships on the Pacific Coast and Southwest: Stranger Intimacy: Contesting Race, Sexuality and the Law in the North American West (University of California Press, 2011).
