Avocado Tree Growing Water n Fertilizer Issues

submitted by Ching Yang on 05/19/14 1

At this delivery in Oceanside CA I meet with a customer who has paid too much and got too little in the way of quality avocado trees from a local retailer. The trees they bought were sunburned and not vigorous at all. The first step was increase watering, since the soil is very sand and on slope, so the soil moisture is always going to be problem. Next was to start a regular fertilizer program using some ammonium sulfate and horse manure. The customers have several horses and the money put into the mouth of the horse produces excellent plant food at the back end of the horse. I usually suggest 4 inches of raw manure at least 3 feet around the trees. I will return at the end of the summer to see how the trees improved and how well they buyers are taking care of the trees they bought from me.
