The government’s monthly report on retail sales for April is due on Friday, and the results are likely to be ugly. - March was 8.3% - April was just announced at 16.4% - This is by far the largest two-month decline on record. 2. Reality Check for the stock market It is becoming clearer that the economy isn’t going to come roaring back quickly, and investors are catching on. The Dow lost 4.5% from Monday to Wednesday, its largest three-day drop since hitting bottom in March 3. Uber put a bid in to buy Grubhub this week causing the stock to skyrocket. Uber wants to dominate home delivery, but that industry is suffering its own profitability crisis. The merger might lower overhead costs, BTIG analyst Peter Saleh said, but added, “We are unsure that it would be enough to reach profitability per order.” 4. As the confirmed U.S. death toll surpassed 85,000 on Thursday, vaccine expert Rick Bright warned Congress that the nation faces the “darkest winter in modern history” if the government does not develop a more coordinated coronavirus response. 5. States Reopening- For some states, including New York Friday will mark the start of a piecemeal approach to reopening, as restrictions remain in some areas while being eased in counties with smaller populations and few coronavirus infections. House Deomocrats Voting today on new stimulus package and it is expected to pass - Break down in the senate - Majority Party: Republican (53 seats) - Minority Party: Democrat (45 seats) - Other Parties: 2 Independents (both caucus with the Democrats) - Total Seats: 100 2. After this is will be sent to the house and right now the Republicans say it is dead on arrival and it won’t pass because a lot of their wants are not included in the bill such as unauthorized immigrants qualify for the payments and provisions to protect businesses. 3. Other republican senators have voices that our goal right now should be getting people back to work and not giving them more direct stimulus payments 4. Earlier Thursday, Mr. McConnell expressed his thoughts on the House legislation on the Senate floor as an “1,800-page seasonal catalog of left-wing oddities” and a “totally unserious effort.” 5. However the fed and others are urging congress to get another stimulus package to pass Old Stimulus Check: 1. According to the IRS, they are beginning to send out SSI papers stimulus checks today May 15 to those of you who receive paper stimulus checks in the mail for your benefits but this doesn’t include benefit recipients with payees 2.
