Miguel Cotto and Antonio Margarito collides once again in a rematch, after their memorable Welterweight bout in 2008 where Cotto was stopped in a gruelling 11 round battle. This time, both men fought at a 153 pound catchweight. Cotto’s WBA Super Welterweight belt is on the line where he makes his 2nd defense of the title. After handing then undefeated Miguel Cotto his first loss in July 2008, Margarito is scheduled to take on Sugar Shane Mosley as the 1st defense of his newly won WBA Welterweight title. Mosley as a 4-1 betting underdog dominated the younger Margarito through 9 rounds, and handing him his 1st knockout defeat. Before the bout, the infamous hand wraps controversy took place which later resulted in a one year suspension for Margarito and his trainer, Javier Capetillo. The incident raised suspicions as to the legitimacy of some of Margarito’s notable wins as well as his punching power. After the suspension is over, Margarito takes on Roberto Garcia and won via UD. In November 2010, Margarito takes on Manny Pacquiao with the vacant WBC World Super Welterweight strap on the line. Despite having significant size, reach, height and weight advantages over the naturally smaller Pacquiao he was dominated through 12 rounds. Margarito suffered a terrible beating and was hospitalized after the fight due to a fractured right orbital bone. The Tijuana Tornado remains inactive for over a year after that fight. On the other hand, Miguel Cotto challenged and beat Michael Jennings via TKO for the vacant WBO Welterweight title. In June 2009, he makes his 1st defense of the WBO strap against Joshua Clottey where Cotto won via a close SD. In November 2009. Cotto makes his 2nd defense of his WBO title against Filipino legend Manny Pacquiao. In an explosive bout, Cotto was able to trouble Pacquiao time after time and fought resiliently but ultimately succumbs to Pacquiao’s incredible speed, power and relentless volume punching. Bouncing back from the defeat, Cotto stops Yuri Foreman in June 2010 to bag the WBA World Super Welterweight title. His 1st defense of the title would be against Ricardo Mayorga, which he won in another hard fought bout; stopping Mayorga in the 12th round. Cotto is set for his rematch against Margarito, as he attempts to avenge his 2008 loss. Going into the fight, Cotto and Margarito had records of 36(29)-2 and 38(27)-7-1 respectively. In the pre fight press conference, Cotto told Margarito that "he will slap him like a little girl.” Unlike their competitive 1st meeting, Cotto largely dominates the fight and in the 3rd round Margarito suffered a cut above his right eye which ultimately became bad enough for the ringside physician to stop the fight before the 10th round begins. By the time of the stoppage, Cotto was ahead 89-82 in all scorecards. Margarito did not hurt Cotto significantly throughout 9 rounds; which further raised suspicions on the true extent of Margarito's punching power as well as the legitimacy of his victory in his first encounter with Cotto and some of his best wins.
