David Gilmour - Charity #ClientEarth Pink Floyd’s David Gilmour auctions his guitars in benefit of environmental law. The environmental law charity ClientEarth has received a donation from the famous Pink Floyd´s guitarist, singer and composer to contribute to its fight to protect the environment and tackle climate change through Law. Gilmour said he admired ClientEarth´s work, which he referred to as “an organization that uses the power of the law to protect the planet and the people who live on it. ClientEarth has a close relationship with Spain through its collaboration with the Instituto Internacional de Derecho y Medio Ambiente (IIDMA) on projects concerning energy transition and climate change. IIDMA, founded in 1996, is the only environmental law NGO of its kind in Spain. The musician has auctioned 126 guitars through Christie´s, some of which have played an essential role in the history of rock, such as Fender’s Black Stratocaster, which has reached a record figure. The guitar used to record, among others, “The dark side of the moon”, “Wish you were here” or “The Wall”, reached 3.5 million euros. Two other guitars, a 1955 Gibson Les Paul and a White Fender Stratocaster, used for parts 1, 2 or 3 of the album “Another Brick in the Wall”, also reached very high figures: 400,000 and 1.5 million euros, respectively. The final revenue of the auction was more than 18 million euros. “The global climate crisis is the greatest challenge that humanity will ever face, and we are within a few years of the effects of global warming being irreversible. As Greta Thunberg, the 16-year-old Swedish climate activist said in a speech earlier this year, “Either we choose to go on as a civilization, or we don’t”. The choice really is that simple, and I hope that the sale of these guitars will help ClientEarth in their cause to use the law to bring about real change.” Gilmour said in his Twitter account. “It is excellent news that artists like David Gilmour are focusing on the importance of law in fighting climate change. It is a work that sometimes is not as visible and should receive more support, as the rule of law provides effective tools for the fight against the climate emergency. We think the choice of ClientEarth as the recipient of this donation is very satisfactory, as their partners in Spain and for highlighting the importance of law to protect the environment” says Ana Barreira, director of IIDMA.
