New industrial facilities in Singapore will have to meet minimum energy efficiency standards for cooling systems, starting December 2020. According to the National Environment Agency, Singapore has more than 100 energy-intensive industrial facilities, and most of these reduce heat using water-cooled systems. However, more than 70% of the systems do not operate at optimal efficiency. Existing energy-intensive facilities have until December 2025 to adapt to the new standards. It is estimated that the amount of energy saved will be equivalent to taking 21,000 cars off the road.
