Outstanding Group Philanthropist – Rotary Clubs of Calgary & Surrounding Area (calgaryrotaryfoundation.ca/) Nominated by: Bethany Care Foundation (tinyurl.com/wzno7nn) Rotary Clubs from Calgary and surrounding communities have been philanthropic partners in Calgary for decades, living Rotary’s commitment to the ideal of service in personal, business and community life. Whether contributing as individual Rotarians, as one club or as a collective of clubs, Rotary has shaped our local community in lasting ways as well as tackling some of the most pressing global issues of our time. Rotary has harnessed the power of service above self and giving to help make the following signature projects possible, among many others. The Rotary Atrium: Rotary clubs galvanized their efforts in support of the construction and development of a brand new $67 million 210 bed complex dementia care centre, Bethany Riverview, in the SE community of Dover. It opened in Fall 2018. Bethany Care Society offers the only complex dementia care program of its kind in the Calgary health zone, giving vital support to thousands of families dealing with this devastating disease. Rotary Clubs were the first to the table for Bethany Care Foundation’s $5 million capital campaign with a $1 million pledge to create a stunning, light-filled atrium in the new care centre, providing a safe, beautiful indoor green space for the residents of Riverview, as well as being available for people from surrounding communities to enjoy year round. “ In 1905, Paul Harris started Rotary as a platform for professionals with diverse backgrounds to exchange ideas, form meaningful, lifelong relationships and give back to their communities. 114 years ago, our organization was built on philanthropy, and philanthropy translates to “love of mankind”. It comes from the story of Prometheus who gave fire to humans, where fire symbolizes culture. The way to give has changed over time, but our purpose as Rotarians has remained the same; to make the communities in which we live, better.” ~ Dan Doherty – Rotary District Governor 5360 Produced for the Association of Fundraising Professionals - AFP Calgary & Area Chapter’s Generosity of Spirit Awards as part of the 2019 National Philanthropy Day Celebrations in Calgary community.afpnet.org/afpcalgaryareachapter/home Film Maker – Philip Spink, Glorious Features Inc.
