Following the events at Glendale, George B. McClellan selected Malvern Hill by the James River as his next attempt to inflict casualties on Confederates led by Robert E. Lee. On July 1, 1862, Lee sent numerous infantry advances up the slope of the hill, but in the end Union Artillery proved to be the deciding factor. On July 2, McClellan would withdraw his army back down the James to Harrison’s Landing as the Seven Days Battles of the Peninsula Campaign came to a close.
