The Battle of Gaines’ Mill on June 27, 1862 followed the previous day’s engagement of Beaver Dam Creek as part of the Seven Days Battles of the Peninsula Campaign. Union forces led by Fitz John Porter held their position against disjointed Confederate attacks for the majority of the day. By dusk, Robert E. Lee managed a more organized assault forcing the Federals to flee for the protection of the Chickahominy River.
