On May 15, 1862 Federal warships steamed up the James River in an attempt to take the Confederate capital by water. Confederate forces were prepared for such an attack and laid heavy fire on the Union ships, in addition to creating physical barriers in the James. This resulted in a failed endeavor to take Richmond, and would be the Union's last attempt to do so by water.
