During expressive reading, underline with your voice read slowly, pause, go with the author's style ask open-ended questions, "What are we thinking so far?" avoid yes/no questions. invite personal response don't overdo questions After ask what students thought of the story ask higher level questions that require students to revisit the text students can retell the story to one another with structured retelling or a checklist focus on key themes of the story for discussion
