Transporting a Caterpillar D11R Part 1

submitted by mojbager on 04/23/14 1

On 9-29-09 I caught Empire Transport of Mesa, AZ moving this huge Caterpillar D11R (shipping weigth: 163,200 lbs.) on Highway 177 between Superior and Winkleman. Though it doesn't look like it, this is one steep road. 10% down grade immediately followed after the curve at the bottom of the road by a 10% up grade! I've been told several times that this is the steepest paved road in all of Arizona! As the driver begins to exit the curve he quickly tries to build some much needed momentum to help him up the next grade. About 5 mph was all that fat-radiator Kenworth T800W could muster on those grades. Sorry about the very shaky camera work. In addition to keeping my eyes peeled for snakes in the grass next to the road, this was also the very first thing I had ever shot with my brand new JVC Everio camera. Small camera and shaky hands don't always make the best videos!
