NOAA’s Regional Integrated Sciences & Assessments (RISA) program supports research teams that help expand and build the nation’s capacity to prepare for and adapt to climate variability and change. New York City faces a growing risk of higher temperatures and more frequent and intense heat waves. Extreme heat, the event responsible for the most weather-related fatalities each year, has disproportional impacts on urban areas and vulnerable populations that reside there. The Consortium for Climate Risk in the Urban Northeast (CCRUN), a NOAA RISA team, built on existing partnerships with the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, the New York City Mayor's Office of Recovery and Resiliency, and the POINT, a community group, to address the impacts of extreme heat on city residents. CCRUN researchers developed a social vulnerability index that identified neighborhoods within New York City at greatest risk of high temperatures. Partnering with the city government and a community group, a targeted program and response is now underway using the results from CCRUN research.
