In Defense of Our Daughters: Brothers Against Sexual Violence Panel Discussion Sex Crimes Against Black Girls Exhibit Public Programming BRSC will host In Defense of Our Daughters: Brothers Against Sexual Violence, an all male panel moderated by Quentin Walcott, featuring community developer Baye Adofo-Wilson, Professor Anyabwile Love, and filmmaker Joshua Bee Alafia. The discussion will address how men are actively working to pr...event issues of sexual violence against women in the local community and abroad. About the Panelists: Quentin Walcott: Director of CONNECT’s Training Institute and Community Empowerment Program. At CONNECT, a New York City based organization dedicated to ending family and gender violence, Quentin also spearheads the Male Anti-Violence initiatives, where he creatively develops educational and training programs to cultivate participation and leadership by men in the anti-violence movement. Recent projects include the Verizon Joint Labor Management Committee initiative, Men & Women as Allies, a collaborative project that includes CWA Cornell University’s ILR School, for Verizon management and craft from CWA Locals 1106 & 1108, which creates awareness on the connections between Domestic violence, Bullying and Workplace violence. As a convener of the newly created V-Day Men’s Committee, he developed a curriculum and training for young adult males that examined violence against women and girls at V-Day’s New York Stop the Violence Festival. Quentin and his team of anti-violence educators have launched new city-wide network and workshops for men called Men@Work, looking to transform men and women from bystanders to allies to activists against family and gender violence. About Baye Adofo-Wilson: Baye Adofo-Wilson is a planner, lawyer, activist and the Executive Director of Lincoln Park Coast Cultural District (LPCCD), a sustainable arts and cultural community development corporation redeveloping the Lincoln Park neighborhood in Newark, NJ. LPCCD is building a sustainable arts and cultural district by constructing affordable green housing, building sustainable performance venues, training local residents through their green job training program and growing food in their urban farm. He is also a former Producer of the Black August Hip-Hop Benefit Concerts, a hip-hop benefit concert for the families of US political prisoners and prisoners of war. About Anyabwile Love : Anyabwile Love is a PhD student at Temple University in the department of African American Studies. A Philadelphia native he received both his Bachelor and Masters in African American studies from Temple as well. His dissertation topic focuses on the African retentions of cultural meaning making in the compositions of John Coltrane. A primary focus of his research will be to examine the structure and function of the Akan proverbs and to identify within Coltrane’s composition similarities in function. Particular attention being paid to how Akan proverbs and Coltrane’s compositions express the history and wisdom of its people. Anyabwile has presented on various aspects of African tradition and contemporary culture at Temple’s Graduate Conference, National Council of Black Studies annual Conference and at the Schomburg Institute for Research. As well he has appeared on several radio talk shows discussing African music and Hip Hop and has written for the Black Commentator. Currently Anyabwile serves as a Teaching Assistant at Temple University where he teaches ‘The History of African Music’ and ‘The History of Hip-Hop’. He also serves as a adjunct professor at Lincoln University where he teaches ‘Intro to African American History’. During the summer of 2011 Anyabwile will be studying and researching in Ghana with noted musicologist Kwabena Nketia. About joshua bee alafia: joshua bee alafia started making films in high school and graduated from the University of California at Santa Cruz with a BA in Film in 1995. Since then he has been freelancing as a Cinematographer and Editor in World Cinema. His cinematographer credits in documentaries include; Every Day Art in Cuba, We Just Tellin’ Stories: Rodessa Jones’ Medea Project, Making Tortillas with the Mayans, Besouro Preto, Behind the Green Line, the Road to Sao Tome, the Cuban Hip Hop All Stars, Havana Habibi, Dub Poet: Oku Onuora and Addis Ababa ‘74. His editor credits include the documentaries Juneteenth Community, Louisiana Cane, and the Sundance Jury Award Winning Wet Dreams and False Images. He has shot music videos for Luciano, Bikram Singh, King David, Boomaz and Poet, Ainsley Burrows. His film credits as writer/ director include the Anti Vigilante, Bold As Love, Maybe Dreams Can Come True and the award winning Cubamor. joshua bee alafia resides in Brooklyn, NY.
