FIBER TO FABRIC We see many kinds of fabrics around us. These are of different textures. The fabrics that we use are made up of different kinds of fibres like cotton, silk, jute and wool. These are natural fibres as these are obtained from plants and animals. We can get cotton and jute from the plants. Fibre like wool can be drawn from fleece of sheep or goats and from rabbit and yak hair. The cocoon of silk worm provides us with silk. There are some fibres which are called synthetic fibres and these are made with the help of chemical substances. Polyester, nylon and acrylic are some of the synthetic fibres. PLANT FIBRES 1. COTTON - We get cotton from cotton plants which are grown at warm climate places having black soils. When the cotton bolls mature, it opens and the seeds are covered with cotton fibres. Then, cotton is picked from these bolls. The separation of fibres from seeds is done by combing. This procedure is known as ginning of cotton which can be done by hand or machines. 2. JUTE -- The cultivation of jute plants is done in rainy seasons. We get the jute fibre from the stem of the jute plant. When the plant is at its blossoming stage it is harvested and then the stem is submerged in water for few days. After this, the separation of stem rot and fibre is done by hand.
