Brazil: Indigenous voices and the climate change debate

submitted by Instituto Socioambiental - ISA on 04/11/14 1

Davi Kopenawa, leader of the Yanomami one of Brazil's biggest indigenous groups says the Amazon is being destroyed and indigenous people must have a voice in negotiations on climate change. Brazil contains 30 per cent of the worlds tropical rainforest and one-fifth of all freshwater resources. Indigenous people are key to protecting them. Meanwhile forests are being destroyed to make way for cattle pastures, and to grow sugarcane and soya for biofuels. Its time to listen to the voices of people living amid this destruction and to help them protect our natural resources before its too late. Thanks to our friends at Survival International for the Yanomami footage.
