And a good part of practical reality boils down to coming to terms with the fact that your dreams won’t go far if you don’t have the means of financing them - even in France. One of the main problems in this respect is that, while there are plenty of specialized books and expat websites giving valuable, practical advice and information on moving and settling in France, very little detail is forthcoming on how much it’s all going to set you back. This is understandably so, for the variables are so great that it’s difficult, if not impossible to give more than a rough general estimation of the minimum costs that will be involved. Individual circumstances, lifestyle and work choice, the region you opt for, and how much you’re prepared to compromise on your original aspirations all come into play. What will it cost me (and my family) to survive over a given period once I/we get there? Will the income and/or savings I dispose of allow me to do this? How do I propose earning a future, dependable living? And if your dream involves becoming master of your own working destiny, not only will you have to research the level of investment required, but also make a realistic assessment of how long your planned business will take before providing a regular and satisfactory source of income.
