I Am the Only One is a personal documentary that follows 16 year old Aicha Cherif as she reconciles a fractured relationship with her mother. When Aicha was one, there were rumors in Guinea that she would be stolen to undergo female genital mutilation. At the age of 17 Sarangbe, her mother, sent Aicha to New York City to live with her grandparents in an attempt to salvage Aicha from the same fate. Due to extended separation, sacrifice, and distance, mother and daughter struggle to connect.
