Russia, Ukraine, and the Geopolitics of Europe

Stanley and Arlene Ginsburg Family Foundation Lecture Series April 21, 2015 FPRI founder Robert Strausz-Hupé once observed that “world history is not a succession of happy endings.” If we needed a reminder, the Russian invasion of Ukraine has provided it. What is to become of Ukraine? How to discern Russian intentions beyond Ukraine? How to assess the West’s capacity to respond? To explore these questions, we are pleased to feature an outstanding scholar of European politics and diplomacy – Jakub Grygiel, the George H.W. Bush Associate Professor of International Relations at Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies. Grygiel is also a Senior fellow at FPRI and at the Center for European Policy Analysis. Author of Great Powers and Geopolitical Change (Johns Hopkins Press), he received his Ph.D. from Princeton University. He writes regularly for all the major journals of commentary as well as in US, Swiss, Polish, and Italian newspapers. He has been a consultant to the OECD and the World Bank.
