His Excellency Nabil Fahmy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Arab Republic of Egypt Introduction and Moderated Q&A by Dr. Jon B. Alterman Brzezinski Chair in Global Security and Geostrategy and Director, CSIS Middle East Program Ambassador Nabil Fahmy serves as the foreign minister of Egypt, a position he has held since 2013. A career diplomat for 40 years, he was ambassador to the United States from 1999-2008, ambassador to Japan from 1997-1999, and political adviser to the foreign minister from 1992-1997. Before returning to full-time government service, between 2009 and 2013 he served as the founding dean of the School of Global Affairs and Public Policy at the American University in Cairo. He has a long history working on Arab-Israeli peace issues and non-proliferation. Ambassador Fahmy was born in New York when his father worked as a diplomat at the United Nations. Ambassador Fahmy holds a B.Sc. in physics and mathematics and a M.A. in management, both from the American University in Cairo. He also received an honorary doctorate from the Monterey Institute of International Studies, an affiliate of Middlebury College, in May 2009.
