Jeanne E. Abrams takes a look at the First Ladies of the Republic: Martha Washington, Abigail Adams, Dolley Madison, and the Creation of an Iconic American Role. The position of First Lady was not officially authorized or defined, but they worked to project a public persona that inspired approval and confidence. While helping to burnish their husbands' Presidential reputations, they also helped to define a role for women in public and private life in America. A book signing will follow the program.
