The Stavros Niarchos Foundation Lecture in Hellenic Studies was established in 2004 in honor of the Program’s sponsors. The Program had been funded by the Stavros Niarchos Foundation as a pilot program from 2001 to 2007. In 2007 the Board of Directors of the Foundation endowed the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Center for Hellenic Studies at Yale University, which funds activities of the Hellenic Studies Program at the Whitney and Betty MacMillan Center for International and Area Studies at Yale. The lecture series brings to the Yale campus distinguished scholars in the humanities and social sciences, public figures, and artists of international reputation. Michael S. Dukakis is Distinguished Professor of Political Science at Northeastern University, and a visiting professor at the Luskin School of Public Affairs at UCLA. He and former U.S. Senator Paul Simon authored How to Get Into Politics – and Why, which was designed to encourage young people to think seriously about politics and public service as a career. Dukakis was the three-term governor of Massachusetts and the 1988 Democratic nominee for president of the United States.
