Conservator Erik Risser describes the history and recent conservation of the Apollo Saettante, a bronze sculpture of the god Apollo that was buried by the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius in A.D. 79 and unearthed in 1817 and 1818. The statue was conserved in 2009 and 2010 at the J. Paul Getty Museum at the Getty Villa in collaboration with the Museo Archeologico Nazionale in Naples, Italy, and is on view in the exhibition "Apollo from Pompeii: Conserving an Ancient Bronze" through September 12, 2011.
