Organized to commemorate that occasion, this symposium addresses the more recent history of photography, with particular attention to how Los Angeles has taken part over the past twenty-five years. Topics of discussion range from photographic education in Southern California institutions and Los Angeles as a photographic subject to critical perspectives on photography’s future in terms of exhibitions, collections, and artistic practices. This event was sponsored by the Getty Museum Photographs Council (GMPC). Established in 2005, the GMPC supports the Department of Photographs of the J. Paul Getty Museum. Funds from the GMPC assist the Museum with the acquisition of modern and contemporary photographs, as well as educational programming.
