Ways of Seeking: Art, Science, and Spirituality

submitted by Marvin's Underground Evening Lectures on 10/10/18 1

December 4, 2016 J. Paul Getty Museum, The Getty Center, Los Angeles, California Art, science, and religion are each in a different way engaged by that which lies beyond reach. On the 35th anniversary of the MacArthur Fellowship Program, eight past fellows reflected on what the fellowship stimulated them to attempt in their artistic, scientific, and spiritual pursuits. Participants include multi-media artist and activist Joan Abrahamson, nanotechnologist Paul Rothemund, physicist Hideo Mabuchi, space scientist Michael C. Malin, religion scholar Jack Miles, and artists Liza Lou, Trimpin, and Elizabeth Turk. In their conversation they discuss their extraordinary projects, the ways their fellowships impacted their work, and how cross-disciplinary exchange helps them. They also share anecdotes about the legendary phone calls from the MacArthur Foundation informing them about their awards. Find out what's on now at the Getty: www.getty.edu/360/ #gettytalks
