Session IV: The Cosmology of the Cave May 21, 2016, University of California, Los Angeles Introduction by Lothar von Falkenhausen Moderator and Session Chair: William Bodiford Lectures by Sonya Lee, Robert Sharf, and Michelle McCoy A symposium in honor of the life and work of Fan Jinshi at the Mogao Grottoes Complementing the exhibition “Cave Temples of Dunhuang: Buddhist Art on China's Silk Road,” this symposium brings together more than 20 international scholars. Their presentations on the Mogao Grottoes explore the unique confluence of historical perspectives, spiritual content, artistic practice, and innovative approaches to conservation. Keynote speaker Rong Xinjiang discusses Mogao's distinctive geography and history. Sessions address the media of wall paintings and manuscripts as well as the iconographic themes of the caves, particularly their deep and layered Buddhist content.
