Journalist Hal Weitzman discusses South America's independence from the U.S. and the region's economic future. Weitzman analyzes the questions: - Will the U.S. continue losing influence in Latin America? - Will China soon dominate the area both commercially and strategically? - Can the U.S. do business with countries from Mexico to Argentina without interfering in their internal affairs? Due to demand from emerging economies, most South American governments have become increasingly "resource nationalistic," ramping up social spending to decrease poverty levels. Weitzman is the Financial Times' Chicago and Midwest bureau chief, and has reported from Peru, Bolivia, Ecuador, Venezuela and Chile. The World Beyond the Headlines is a project of the Center for International Studies, which brings scholars, journalists, and world leaders to the University to discuss issues of current global importance.
