Journalist Robert Nickelsberg examines the history and legacies of war in Afghanistan through 25 years of photographs. Recorded January 13, 2014 Acclaimed photojournalist Robert Nickelsberg discusses his new book "Afghanistan - A Distant War", a photographic history of the conflict in Afghanistan from 1988-2013. In this work, Nickelsberg conveys the stark consequences of war, poverty and oppression in Afghanistan. Working for Time magazine and The New York Times, Nickelsberg has been publishing his images of this remote yet now-familiar country from 1988, when the mujahideen fought to expel the Soviet Union, through the U.S. withdrawal 25 years later. This remarkable volume contains more than 100 full-color photographs, accompanied by Nickelsberg's commentary, insightful essays from experts on Afghanistan, and a perceptive foreward by Jon Lee Anderson of The New Yorker. Robert Nickelsberg has documented Afghanistan since 1988, when he accompanied a group of mujahideen crossing the border from Pakistan. He has worked as a Time magazine contract photographer for nearly thirty years, specializing in political and cultural change in developing countries. His images have appeared in publications and broadcasts that include Time, The New York Times, Newsweek, the Wall Street Journal, the Financial Times, the Guardian, Paris Match, Stern, CNN and NBC. His photographs have been exhibited at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the International Center of Photography and a the New America Foundation in New York.
