Date recorded: 03/03/2011 Debate: This House Believes a Nuclear Iran is Better Than War PROPOSITION: MICHAEL SMITH is an award-winning investigative journalist; he writes for The Sunday Times and New Statesman on defence issues and has reported from Iraq, Kosovo and Afghanistan. Smith notably broke the story of the leaking of the Downing Street Memos in 2005 which alleged that the evidence for initiating a war with Iraq had been exaggerated. SIR RICHARD DALTON, a former senior diplomat, has been posted in Lebanon, Jordan, New York and Oman. He has been Ambassador to the Palestinian Authority as well as to Libya, and was Ambassador to Iran from 2003 to 2006. Sir Richard is now an associate fellow on the Middle East and North Africa programme at Chatham House. PROFESSOR SCOTT LUCAS is professor of American Studies at Birmingham University, and editor of the 'Journal of American Studies'. A specialist in British and US foreign policy, he has written several books, including 'Divided We Stand: Britain, the US and the Suez Crisis', and published over 30 articles. OPPOSITION: PROFESSOR MERVYN FROST is the Head of the Department of War Studies at King's College, London. He is currently on the editorial boards of International Political Sociology, Journal of International Political Theory and South African Journal of International Affairs. He has served on the Executive Committee of the International Studies Association and was until 2008 Chairman of its International Ethics Section. DOUGLAS MURRAY is a best-selling political author and journalist, famed for his controversial views. In 2007 he assisted in the writing of 'Towards a Grand Strategy for an Uncertain World: Renewing Transatlantic Partnership'. Dubbed "Britain's only neo-conservative", Murray is the director of the Centre for Social Cohesion. DR ALAN MENDOZA is the co-founder and executive director of the Henry Jackson Society. He is an acclaimed speaker on topics of foreign policy, particularly concerning the transatlantic relationship, the Middle East and Russia.
