During the 2015 election campaign, Labour was criticised for not having a clear vision for the country. Now under Jeremy Corbyn, its direction has swung rapidly to the left, embracing positions not seen in the mainstream of British politics for decades. The Union asks whether the Labour party has lost its way, if it has returned to its true principles, or if it is in fact on a journey to renew the tired ground of the centre-left. ***** PROPOSITION ***** Lord Bilimoria, a cross-bench peer, was Vice President of the Union in 1988, before founding and chairing the Cobra Beer Partnership. He is also the Chancellor of the University of Birmingham. Toby Young is a British journalist and the author of How to Lose Friends and Alienate People. He famously wrote an article in The Telegraph urging Conservatives to vote for Jeremy Corbyn as Labour Leader. Zack Hassan is a medical student at Jesus College and a regular on the Cambridge Union floor. ***** OPPOSITION ***** Charlotte Ivers is a third year History and Philosophy of Science student at Pembroke, and the Union's President for Easter 2016. She is hoping to still be on the same side of this debate by June. Ben Kentish is a former President of the Cambridge Union Society and has previously worked as a political adviser to David Lammy MP. Thomas Fairclough is studying for his doctrate at Gonville and Caius college, in which he is focusing on common law rights.
